Results from Samples Checked by Toronto’s Drug Checking Service: May 23 – June 5, 2020

Checked Samples by Sample Type

Between May 23 – June 5, 2020, 45 samples were checked: 56% (25) were substances and 44% (20) were post-use paraphernalia.

 

Checked Samples by Expected Drug

When a client submits a sample to be checked, they indicate which drug they expect that sample to contain. Of the 45 samples checked between May 23 – June 5, 2020:

  • 19 were expected to be fentanyl
  • 5 were expected to be crack
  • 5 were expected to be methamphetamine
  • 2 were expected to be MDMA
  • 5 were expected to be other drugs, including: cocaine, heroin, ketamine, oxymetholone, and testosterone
  • 7 were expected to be a polysubstance
  • 2 did not have a stated expected drug

 

Expected Fentanyl Samples

Of the 45 samples checked between May 23 – June 5, 2020, 42% (19) were expected to be fentanyl (37% were substances and 63% were post-use paraphernalia).

  • 11% (2) contained no fentanyl
  • 89% (17) contained fentanyl and other drugs

Of the 19 samples expected to be fentanyl, 89% (17) contained fentanyl and other drugs. Other drugs found included:

  • 94% (16) of expected fentanyl samples contained caffeine
  • 35% (6) of expected fentanyl samples contained despropionyl fentanyl (4-ANPP)*
  • 29% (5) of expected fentanyl samples contained one or more benzodiazepine or benzodiazepine-related drug*:
    • 29% (5) of expected fentanyl samples contained etizolam*
    • 6% (1) of expected fentanyl samples contained flualprazolam*
  • 24% (4) of expected fentanyl samples contained 6-MAM (heroin-related)
  • 18% (3) of expected fentanyl samples contained ACHMINACA (synthetic cannabinoid-related)*
  • 18% (3) of expected fentanyl samples contained phenacetin*
  • 6% (1) of expected fentanyl samples contained furanyl UF-17 (opioid-related)*
  • 6% (1) of expected fentanyl samples contained levamisole*

 

Other Expected Drug Samples Containing Unexpected Noteworthy Drugs

Of the remaining 26 samples checked between May 23 – June 5, 2020, meaning samples that were not expected to be fentanyl, 35% (9) contained one or more unexpected noteworthy drug. Unexpected noteworthy drugs found included:

  • 100% (5) of expected crack samples contained phenacetin*
  • 100% (1) of expected heroin samples contained ACHMINACA (synthetic cannabinoid-related)*
  • 100% (1) of expected heroin samples contained etizolam (benzodiazepine-related)*
  • 100% (1) of expected heroin samples contained fentanyl*

 

*Unexpected noteworthy drug: “Noteworthy drugs” are drugs that are highly potent, linked to overdose or other adverse effects, or may not be desired by some clients. Noteworthy drugs are called out when they are unexpectedly found in checked samples.
